What changes are needed in a vehicle to use the Metryon powertrain?
The vehicle must be electric. We replace the large traction battery with the Metryon powertrain, a smaller buffer battery, and a fuel tank. The electric motor is then powered by electricity generated onboard.
How much does the Metryon powertrain weigh for a passenger car?
About 100 kg, compared with roughly 400 kg for a typical BEV battery pack. With enough fuel for ~1,000 km, the total system mass is about 150 kg, which reduces vehicle weight and energy use.
Where is the powertrain installed?
It is installed in the space originally used by the traction battery. The vehicle manufacturer determines the optimal placement. Because it’s smaller and lighter than a battery pack, packaging is easier.
Can you install the powertrain in a conventional (non-electric) vehicle?
Not directly. The system generates electricity and must supply an electric drivetrain.
How much fuel is required to drive 500 km in a 2.5-ton van?
About 19 liters (depending on the vehicle and drive cycle).
How far can a municipal bus travel on one tank of fuel?
About 1,350 km in city driving with a 150-liter tank (stop-and-go operation). For comparison, a battery-electric bus would require multiple recharges and a much heavier battery system for the same distance.
What is the average efficiency compared with an internal-combustion vehicle?
Roughly twice as efficient as an equivalent internal-combustion vehicle, with quiet operation and zero tailpipe emissions.
